Rating: 5 out of 5.

I love monster books. There’s something about a big, scary monster who wants nothing but to take care of a little human lady – and all human ladies are tiny to monsters, generally – and the lady who’s willing to look past the monster image and fall in love. I’m a sucker for it.

Reia is a young woman who is effectively exiled by her village because they blame her for the tragedy that befell her family as a child. Nobody talks to her, she’s locked in her house a lot of the time, sometimes people throw things at her. So when the village is in need of a virgin sacrifice to give a monster in payment for protection from the demons that surround them, it’s a perfect solution. And if she says no, they’ll lock her in a dungeon for real, so she’s not going to argue.

Orpheus – the monster in question – is glad that he found someone who doesn’t smell like fear (which ignites his unfortunate instinct for hunting and eating). He’s still trying to recover from a long-ago betrayal, and while he doesn’t want to get his hopes up that he’s found someone to stay, he has a good feeling about Reia.

The Steamy Stuff – Spoilers!

The spice is pretty good here, friends. It starts with plenty of touching that isn’t supposed to be sexual but they’re both pretending they aren’t into it, and by the 25% mark they’re done pretending. Orpheus is a big boy, with a big dick, and he knows how to use it. It does include realism that a look of books don’t; if you’ve ever asked “Why didn’t Edward go insane when Bella was on her period?”, this book will satisfy you.
