Rating: 5 out of 5.

I have a confession. I have reviews that still need to be written for something like five books I’ve read, and I haven’t even started. I was also supposed to be asleep several hours ago, but let me explain why I’m writing this review at 1 AM instead of acting like a responsible adult.

I read this book – Good Game, Gamer Girl – today, in about three sittings. I had never heard of it until two days ago when I saw a post about it on, I think, Threads and thought it sounded cute. And then I opened it up this morning and it somehow was everything I wanted in a book.

Okay, a summary: A young woman is on a years-long quest to beat her ex-boyfriend’s ranking in a competitive online game after he broke up with her for sucking at it. Right as she accomplishes this goal, she runs into one of the top competitive players of that game in the world. They’re into each other immediately, but instead of dealing with that, they try to focus on keeping their relationship professional; he’s going to coach her into becoming pro-level herself, since he’s off with an injury.

No monsters. No tentacles. No weird stuff. Just absolutely freaking adorable. Emma has actual problems and insecurities. Alex just wants to be with her. It’s perfect.

Nothing crazy happens in this book. Nobody gets kidnapped or brainwashed; there’s no Act 3 breakup, no horrible fight caused by a simple miscommunication that a normal couple would resolve in one sentence. It’s cute, it’s funny, it’s straightforward, and it’s a breath of fresh air.

The Steamy Stuff – Spoilers!

The actual sex takes a while to get going; it’s plenty explicit, but they spend the first portion of the book pining instead of fucking. There’s basically nothing kinky or even questionable here – there’s oral, handjobs, and regular old sex, but no anal or choking or bondage. And honestly, I’m totally fine with that. It’s a short book, very sweet, and I feel like anything kinky would have felt more shocking and out of character than hot for them anyway.
